A Recipe for Autumn Apple Bread

Published September 21, 2010

Autumn is…

Mornings so thick with fog you step outside just to taste the air; then step back in and turn the oven on to warm the kitchen before the kids get up.

Autumn is watching out the window as those same kids pile leaves high enough to toss their kittens into until you rush out to rescue the poor traumatized darlings.

Autumn is pumpkin farm visits layered in oversized scarves and pretty mittens; then coming home to eat hot cinnamon apples and drink cocoa around the toasty fire.

Autumn is good friends, good talks, and better moods because Christmas is coming.

Autumn is spending the afternoon curled in your favorite chair watching the rain drizzle through auburn-tipped leaves as it chips away at the peeling sycamore bark.

Autumn is candles in the window and lanterns along the driveway. Bowls of hot chowder and late night laughter while the owl hoots in front of a full moon.

Autumn is the best book of the moment tucking you into bed.

Autumn is the smell of warm bread pulled from the oven lulling the little ones from sleep with promises of another foggy morning spent in the warm kitchen…

Autumn Apple Bread

A Recipe for Autumn Apple Bread

  1. 1 ¼ cup oil
  2. 4 eggs
  3. 4 tsp. vanilla
  4. 3 cups flour
  5. 2 ½ cups sugar
  6. 2 tsp. cinnamon
  7. 1 ½ tsp. salt
  8. 1 ½ tsp. baking soda
  9. 1 tsp. cloves
  10. ½ tsp. baking powder
  11. 3 cups diced apples (peeled)
  12. 2/3 cup raisins (golden are the best)

I love this recipe for how simple and absolutely 100% delicious it is. You mix the wet ingredients. Mix the dry. Combine. Add the apples and raisins, and mix the whole thing well. Grease and flour 2 loaf pans, and bake 60 to 70 minutes @ 325. You’ll love it. Cross my heart. ;-)

I love your description of autumn–beautifully said. It is my favorite time of year for all the reasons you mentioned. I also love decorating for fall more than any other season or holiday. I get inspired to cook and bake too. Tonight I made chicken noodle soup, perfect for the cooler weather. I could have used it last week when I had a cold ;-)

The apple bread recipe looks and sounds delicious! I will definitely try it.
    Thanks for sharing : )

    Love,

    Joyce

Joyce, I LOVE chicken noodle soup during cool weather, so you’ll have to give me your recipe! I call Autumn my “homebody” season…the time of year when I want to stay home all day with a big pot of soup on the stove and hanging out with the kids :-) . On that note, I think our families should have a fall dinner together…

I will make you a copy of the recipe w/my adjustments and bring it to church. It would be very fun to have our families get together. Let’s see if we can figure out a date that would work.

Mmmmmm… autumn apple bread and Mazzy Star… now I know why we are friends. Our house currently smells like “spiced cake” and Mazzy has been playing for a while… along with Iron and Wine.;-)
