  • THE HOST by Stephenie Meyer (a Book Review by Rilian)

    Friday, February 22nd, 2013

Firstly, let me say THANK YOU to all you preciouses for your super-sweet congrats on last week’s happy dance agenty post. :0) You guys are the best!!!

Secondly, my daughter, Rilian, is back on the blog this week to give us a book review (along with generally just being her adorable self).

She just finished reading Stephenie Meyer’s book THE HOST, which is hitting theaters in movie form on March 29!

    The Host (The Host, #1)

    Quick Summary of THE HOST:

In the dystopian future, Earth has been taken over by alien “souls” who are using human bodies as hosts to live in while working to make the world a “better” place. A world with no fighting or anger.

    A world without “humans.”

When Melanie Stryder, one of the last of Earth’s “wild” humans, gets captured, she’s made into a host for a soul named Wanderer. Except, Wanderer is quickly surprised to find out that her human isn’t willing to let go and allow her mind to vanish into oblivion. As Wanderer searches through Melanie’s thoughts to find the whereabouts of the last remaining human rebels, she discovers that Melanie is hiding things. In an effort to protect the rebels, Melanie keeps forcing up memories of the two most important things in her world—thoughts of the man she loves and also of her little brother. And soon, Wanderer finds herself feeling the same longing for them as Melanie.

As Wanderer and Melanie search through the desert for the rebels, they’re taken captive by them, and Wanderer’s affections for the humans grow. But soon she has to choose a side—become a traitor to her own alien family, or a traitor to the humans she loves.

    What I Loved:

    Where do I start!!!

    1. That the aliens took over the world to make it a better place. And I definitely like their medicines WAY better (emphasis on “WAY”) as there are NO SHOTS. See, a perfect world!
    2. The characters are so sweet. Jeb, with his quirky personality, and Jamie—you can’t not love him. And all the other characters who made this story exciting.
    3. The writing is amazing.
    4. The unlikely friendships between enemies.
    5. ALL of Wanda’s adventures before she came to earth. Oh yeah.
    6. Stephenie Meyer did such a good job on the story’s ending that I didn’t want to finish the book. Because it didn’t seem like it would end well. But I just had to finish it because it’s THAT good, and then it all works together so perfectly that you’ll just have to read it for yourself.

FYI note: the book has some kissing and cussing. :0)

    THE HOST Movie Trailer

Okay, how about you all? Have you read it? Will you see the movie?

  • 6 Must-Have Items for the Rabid Twilight Fan

    Wednesday, November 7th, 2012

With Twilight’s Breaking Dawn (Part 2) movie premiering next week (Nov. 15, people!), I thought you preciouses might need a little help getting into the rabid Twi-fan spirit of things.

You know…beyond the normal Volturi contact lenses, and “Team Edward Except When Jacob is Shirtless” t-shirts, and the sparkly pepper spray you keep in your Twilight fanny pack.

Hence I’ve searched far and wide to offer you some of the more, er…random items you’ll probably need in order to get the most out of your rabid Twilight movie-viewing experience.

    As always, you’re welcome.

DuWop Twilight Venom from Sephora (for sale @ Amazon)

    Twilight Venom

According to the directions, this Twilight Venom “should be shaken before use, to represent the blending of the vampire and human worlds.” Um…good to know. Although, I have to admit I was a bit bummed to discover it’s only lip gloss. I guess I was hoping it’d be more of, well, ACTUAL venom. Maybe even like a mind control potion or something. Unfortunately, no. However, I’m still thinking of trying it out for the whole “blending of vampire and human worlds” thing, which just sounds exciting, whatever the heck it means.

    •

Twilight Car Air Freshener by AAF (for sale @ Amazon) <–click to view

I highly suggest you follow my lead on this and purchase an entire pack of these. I’ll be giving them out to everyone at the theater. Not only will it prove my undying rabid Twi-fanness, but since I can insert a photo of MY OWN face in place of that boring Bella chick’s, it’ll leave everyone with a truly lasting impression of me. Plus, their cars will smell good too, so…TOTAL WIN obviously.

    •

Sparkle, you FOOL! SPARKLE!” Twilight mini button (for sale @ Cafe Press)

Sparkle, you FOOL! SPARKLE! Mini Button

This button should be particularly useful for you when random guys are scoping out the movie theater line looking for cute Twi-fans. You can comfortably state your expectations without having to say anything at all. Just point to the button    —-> “Sparkle, you FOOL! SPARKLE!”  <—-

And if the guy can’t? Well, too bad, so sad, move along.

    •

Twilight’s Breaking Dawn Blanket – Edward with Crest and Ferns (for sale @ Amazon)

Twilight Breaking Dawn Blanket - Edward with Crest and Ferns

I’m thinking this blanket is kind of a two-fer. Firstly, it’ll keep you warm while you’re waiting until midnight in that LOOOOOOOOOOOONG movie line. And then afterward? BAM! You’ve got a new bedroom style! Complete with ferns.

    •

“I’m Edward’s Spider Monkey” Twilight T-shirt (for sale @ Cafe Press)

    Women's T-Shirt

    “I’m Edward’s Spider Monkey”

Believe me when I say in my completely dead-serious tone of voice that I am so totally buying this for my sister for Christmas.

    This is just…amazing. Ahem.

Oh, and last but not least, don’t forget to download your Twilight Stalker Tracker app from iTunes. That way you can stalk connect with other Twihards no matter where you’re at. Not that they’re all that difficult to identify. What with the sparkly drool and all around squealy-ness so familiar to their kind. I can see this app really coming in handy when Twihards are needing to converge for bathroom breaks or Volturi sightings.

And don’t worry–you’ll see me there on opening night. I’ll be the one with gobs of glittery lip venom on, still trying to figure out what the heck ”blending of vampire and human worlds” is even supposed to mean. And wondering how I’ll know when it’s working. (Here’s to seriously hoping I grow fangs.)

How about you, preciouses? Will you be there?

  • It’s the New Hobbit Trailer, Preciouses!

    Wednesday, September 19th, 2012

    •

So this was me when I heard that the new HOBBIT MOVIE TRAILER was released today:

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!! *flails for the wonderful joy of it and hands everyone unicorns and fairies and furry kittens to love*

    •

    The Hobbit Trailer

And now that I’ve watched it?

    This is me:

AUUUUUGHHHHH! THE ANGUISH! Why does it have to be so LOOOONG until the movie comes out? *flails, cries, throws unicorns and cupcakes at the wall, cuddles kittens for comfort*

See how evil they are, preciouses? They wants us to wait and feel the torments and the agonies!

They hates us, preciouses. They does.

Although, perhaps we shall appease ourselves by clickety-clicking on through to the official Hobbit movie website and creating our own alternate ending to the trailer.

Because we likes it, Preciouses. We does.

  • In Which We Start a Cupcake Campaign Directed at Joss Whedon

    Wednesday, July 11th, 2012

As you’ll recall from last week’s review of Marissa Meyer’s book CINDER, I demanded suggested that Joss Whedon make said book into a movie. So of course now I’m all busy contemplating exactly HOW many cupcakes a stalker-ish perfectly normal type person would have to send Joss to garner his attention for this genius sci-fi/dystopian book-to-movie idea.

Especially if I sent him cupcakes that look like

    THIS LOKI CUPCAKE!!!

Via the Avengers Cupcake Line at Nerdache Cakes (a website that is WAY too addicting).

Fabulous, right? These cupcakes would make a bold statement by (1) complimenting Joss (Hey, nice job on the Avengers!) and (2) tempting him into a sugary haze with sweet amazing gloriousness.

    In other words…

He’d be insane not to submit to our movie plan.

    MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

    Um…excuse me for a moment.

*runs off and places order for Avengers cupcakes to be delivered to Joss’s house via a singing telegram type person dressed in a Buffy suit*

    *sits back*

    *relaxes*

*looks at watch, then at phone*

    *checks phone for dial tone*

*sits back and waits some more*

Ahem. SOOOOOO…while we wait for Joss to give us his over-the-top gushingly positive response to my cupcake manipulation (and we also wait for all of our geek friends to get back from Comic-Con), I’ve got a couple of sci-fi books-becoming-movies-I-really-want-to-see that we can talk about.

Okay, actually, let me rephrase that: The first one I really want to see. The second? I’m completely obsessing over in an OMG  PLEASE  BE  AMAZING  BECAUSE  I NEED  TO  SEE  IT  RIGHT  NOW kind of way.

    Firstly: Stephenie Meyer’s THE HOST

I haven’t read this book in a while, but it’s one I enjoyed, especially as a Stargate nerd (is it just me or did she give a nice nod with the whole alien in the neck thing?). Although, adjust yourselves because there’s a complete lack of sparkly vampires in it. Dost I hear some of you cheering? And others are crying I see. Well, vamps or not, I’m uber excited to see it on the big screen.

    Here’s the trailer:

    •

    It looks awesome, yes?

    Yes.

And secondly is only just my very favorite sci-fi novel of all time: ENDER’S GAME!!!

AGH! I CANNOT WAIT FOR THIS MOVIE. And I love that Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, and Asa Butterfield are starring in it. November 1, 2013 – you cannot come soon enough. *sigh*

For that matter, neither can the movie trailer (*hint hint,* movie people).

*stops to pick up phone and check dial tone again*

Well, at least we have our Joss Whedon action figure to eat leftover cupcakes with while we wait.

    (purchase at Toys R Us)

    •

*salutes you* Long may our sci-fi (and cupcake) geek flags wave, preciouses.

    ;0)

  • Six Degrees of Interesting

    Wednesday, November 16th, 2011

While I rarely do roundups, bookish or otherwise, this week was all sorts of intriguing! So, I thought I should share and you could enjoy. (Just click the links as you please.) Because, seriously, how can we bypass the news that Jane Austen might’ve died from arsenic poisoning? I’m totally convinced.

And doesn’t it only seem appropriate that, in light of BREAKING DAWN hitting theaters this week, we read Sarah Blackwood’s fantastic post in defense of Bella Swan’s character? Yes, it does. (note: post includes some swear wordage)

Also coming out, in books not theaters (yet), is my friend Jay Asher and his coauthor Carolyn Mackler’s book, THE FUTURE OF US. It releases next week. You can read their silly interview here and my book review here.

And for those of us who obsess over the HUNGER GAMES more than coffee itself, the Examiner offers us a Hunger Games Holiday Suggestion list of dystopian books that fans might enjoy. Um, yes please!

Which leads us to the HUNGER GAMES MOVIE TRAILER!!! Good gracious it’s incredible! To the point that it exceeded all my expectations. Thank you Hunger Games movie people.

And finally…I had a birthday this week along with my son. Which we combined into a vacation last week. One of the perks of homeschooling is that you get to take time away in the off-season when hotels are cheap and theme parks are empty (plus, we had free tickets!). Here are a few of my favorite moments:

    Sea World San Diego photo

     Yep, that’s me.

    Shamu

     And that’s a giant Orca.

    •

    Mission Bay, San Diego

     And that’s Mission Bay.

    •

    vacation

And that’s some strikingly handsome guy I have a rabid crush on.

    •

    PubCakes photo

    And this is PubCakes.

    •

    PubCakes cupcakes photo

And they make beer batter cupcakes.

And here is my favorite birthday gift from Wolverine.

  • Harry Potter Rabid Fan Pics

    Wednesday, July 20th, 2011

Well, rabid fan peeps, did you see Harry Potter??? Annnnd? Did you love it?

Peter and I did our rabid fan thing opening night (which mainly looks like me being the rabid fan and Pete being my arm-candy) with the most awesome groupies ever! Some of them had been there since the wee hours of the morning and STILL had energy! Like these ladies. Check out the pillow.

I caught this group walking by us in full character, looking way too fabulous. Love the lady in the back!

And lucky us—right after we got in line, THIS cool fan dropped by to hang out with us for the long wait. Hey, Jay Asher! (Sadly, I’m not in costume…blame the long work day. I do have my cool purple hair streaks though. They’re very “Tonks” looking, don’t ya think?)

For much of the evening we held the honored place of Very Last in Line. Until THIS guy came and stole it. We dubbed him “random end of the line guy.” He embraced the title, so, of course, we had to get a pic with him.

Once inside, the theater hosted a costume contest. These two almost won. Aren’t they adorable? I dig her hair.

And apparently Batman is a huge Potter fan. Who knew?

Finally, the show began. My sister, her hubs, and Pete and I sat in the front row with our cool Harry Potter 3D glasses.

My sister cried. I ate gobs of buttered popcorn.

    :0)
